We are looking at adding 80-90 screens every year: Inox Leisure’s Alok Tandon
MUMBAI: Cinema exhibitor Inox Leisure is planning to add 80-90 screens each year as part of its expansion plans. It currently operates 578 screens at 140 multiplexes across 67 cities in India.
“Last year, we opened 85 screens and this financial year we have added 4 screens. We already have a slate of 850 screens signed which we will open in the next few years. We have been very aggressive and that will continue to happen. We are looking at adding 80-90 screens every year,” Inox Leisure chief executive officer Alok Tandon told PTI.
The company will be expanding to tier II and III cities apart from strengthening its presence in tier I cities.
Recently, Inox opened India’s first MX4D EFX Theatre at the existing Inox multiplex at Inorbit Mall at Malad in Mumbai. The roll-out MX4D EFX Theatre was announced at CinemaCon, world’s largest event for the movie theatre industry taking place in Las Vegas from 1st–4th April. At the event, the multiplex also signed a deal with CJ 4DPLEX for bringing the multi-projection technology ScreenX to India.
MX4D, MediaMation’s newest evolution in the 4D cinema experience, provides a totally immersive environment, where the viewers can feel the action on the screen from the built-in motion and effects in the seats and theatre walls and enhance the movie experience. The theatre seats will move in sync with the movie action and special EFX generators in the cinema, allowing you to feel the movie’s motion, jolts, pokes, wind, water, and even scents.
Tandon said that globally, the occupancy of 4D cinemas is much more than the regular one and hence the company is quite bullish about this technology and invested in it. “We will be changing a few of our current screens into MX4D theatre and there would be greenfield theatres also coming up which would have MX4D,” he added.
