Viacom18’s ‘Padmavat’ slated to release on 25 Jan
MUMBAI: After being embroiled in controversy for almost a year, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati, which has been renamed ‘Padmavat’, is set to release on 25 January.
While the producers Viacom18 Motion Pictures have not announced the date, film trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “#Padmavat to release on 25 Jan 2018… #RepublicDayWeekend.”
With the new release date, Padmavat will now clash with Akshay Kumar-starrer Padman.
The film received the clearance from Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) after being screened for a special bench of historians. The historians had suggested five modifications to the producers including the change in the title to Padmavat.
The producers Viacom18 Motion Pictures acceded to the requests and made the necessary changes.
However, Rajasthan government has said that the Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed film will not be allowed to release in the state.
Padmavat, which was scheduled to release on 1 December 2017, landed into a controversy with a group named Rajput Karni Sena raising objections to the portrayal of Queen Padmavati in the film.
The Rajput groups have alleged that the film tarnished the image of the community through wrongful portrayal.
Set in medieval Rajasthan, Queen Padmavati is married to a noble king and they live in a prosperous fortress with their subjects until an ambitious Sultan hears of Padmavati’s beauty and forms an obsessive love for the Queen of Mewar.
The film stars Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor in lead roles.
