Viacom18 to launch Kannada movie channel

MUMBAI: Viacom18, the 51:49 joint venture (JV) between TV18 and Viacom, is planning to launch a Kannada movie channel Colors Kannada Cinema. The pay channel has been priced at Rs 1 under the new tariff regime.

Colors Kannada Cinema will deepen Viacom18’s presence in the Karnataka market. The company’s Colors Kannada is a market leader. Viacom18 further strengthened its grip on the market by launching a second GEC named Colors Super.

Currently, the Kannada movie genre has three players namely Sun TV Network’s Udaya Movies, Star India’s Star Suvarna Plus, and Public Movies, which launched in February this year.

Movie is a popular content theme on Kannada television. According to a BARC report, 12% content on Kannada GECs comprises of movies.

Earlier, Viacom18 head regional entertainment Ravish Kumar had told TelevisionPost.com that the network will push deeper into regional markets by entering new genres.

“Our strategy is to go wider and deeper into markets where we are not present. The markets where we are present we continue to think that what we can do next to make it strong. We are eyeing several markets right now. It is a question of what falls into place,” Kumar had told TelevisionPost.com in April.

Hindi movie channel Rishtey Cineplex was the first channel from the network in movie genre. Launched in May 2016, the channel broke even in the second year of its operations.

Viacom18’s net profit for the fiscal ended March 2018 has expanded 2.7 times to Rs 82.7 crore compared to Rs 30.6 crore in the previous fiscal.

The company’s revenue from operations jumped 21% to Rs 3685.4 crore as against Rs 3036.4 crore. Total expenses shot up 20% to Rs 3593.7 crore compared to Rs 3005.8 crore.

Revenue from ad, distribution and programme syndication increased 13% Rs 3216.4 crore compared to Rs 2850 crore.
