TRAI to create awareness about new broadcasting framework among consumers

MUMBAI: Armed with a favourable verdict from the Supreme Court, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is all set to embark on a consumer outreach programme starting this month.

The idea behind the outreach programme is to create user awareness on the nuances of the new tariff order and interconnection regulation framework for the broadcasting sector.

“For consumers, we will have an outreach programme on the new broadcasting framework. We will explain the new regulations to the consumers, what are their rights and also resolve queries if any,” said TRAI Secretary S K Gupta.

He further stated that the modalities of the consumer outreach programme are currently being worked out. Delhi, Jaipur and other locations are being considered for the same.

Commenting on the Supreme Court order, TRAI chairman RS Sharma said that the order will provide offer consumers a choice, bring transparency and better service quality.

“The regulations are “consumer-friendly”, as they give people choice to subscribe to channels they want to see, and not be unnecessarily thrust channels in the name of bouquets,” he added.

Sharma also said that every channel’s maximum retail price (MRP) will be displayed individually in the electronic programme guide so that people will be able to subscribe to individual channels also.

The SC had recently dismissed Star India and Vijay Television’s plea challenging the jurisdiction of TRAI to frame the tariff for TV broadcasters.
