TRAI asks DTH cos to allow pre-paid customers to continue with long-term packs

MUMBAI: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has asked the direct to home (DTH) operators to continue long-term packs of pre-paid customers if they so wish.

The regulator’s advise has come in the wake of reports that the DTH operators are asking long-duration pre-paid customers to choose channels under the new pricing framework.

“Where customers have already exercised their choice and decided to move to the new framework if they have long or short duration packs, it (the payment made) will get adjusted,” TRAI chairman RS Sharma told PTI.

“In those cases where people have not yet migrated and they have a long or short duration plan already on, the regulation clearly states that customers have the choice to continue with it, till the plan expires.”

Sharma also said that the subscribers of long-term packs can exercise their choice under the regime whenever they want. In that case, the balance money left in customer wallet will be adjusted by the DTH operator.

In a nutshell, the customer has the right to choose whether he or she wants to continue with existing long-term packs or migrate to the new regime.

Apart from long-duration customers, short-duration pack customers will also enjoy continuity. “There’s no question of discontinuation. We’re very clear that in DTH platform also, the customer will not have to suffer since it is a completely pre-paid platform,” Sharma stated.
