Swastik inks deal with Hulu Japan for ‘Porus’
MUMBAI: Swastik Productions-owned One Life Studios has inked deal with Hulu Japan for its historical drama series ‘Porus’. The production house, which owns the IP rights of the series, has been licencing the show in different territories.
Hulu Japan, which shares its name with US SVoD service Hulu, is owned by Nippon Television Network Corp. Hulu Japan was sold to Nippon TV in 2014 by Comcast’s NBCUniversal, 21st Century Fox and The Walt Disney.
Japan becomes the 10th country where the show has been licenced to a local platform. Earlier, One Life Studios had distributed the series in countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Brunei, and Indonesia.
The producers are also in talks with broadcasters in other markets like Africa and Eastern Europe.
Commenting on the deal, Swastik Productions founder Siddharth Kumar Tewary said, “Porus is the first Indian series to be aired in Japan. This is really special for all of us. We had dreamt to make ‘Porus’ as India’s global series and now covering 11 countries and 14 territories. We are moving in the right direction.”
Speaking about the deal Hulu Japan, chief content officer Kazufumi Nagasawa stated, “We are thrilled to introduce our first acquisition of an Indian drama series “Porus” to the audience in Japan. We are keen to introduce unique and outstanding shows which Japanese audience will not have a chance to watch if Hulu Japan does not exist.”
Swastik Productions MD Rahul Kumar Tewary added, “Being the first premier Indian television content to be associated with one of the top premier OTT platforms in Japan- Hulu, it proves that quality content can be of any language- if made well it will relate with the audiences’ worldwide. We are sure our audience in Japan with similar culture will appreciate Porus.”
Following the success of Porus, the production house is all set to introduce a linear story of Chandragupta Maurya in November. Tewary stated that Chandragupta Maurya will be the extension of Porus.
“It will be lending itself to the new series altogether, though it is the continuation. Also this is the first time that it is happening, we will end Porus as a character story but the unification of India, the main thought behind the Porus will continue with Maurya. Because he was the one who actually unified India. It will be seamless transition from one story to another as the characters will be introduced before.”
After creating some of the renowned mythological and historical series such as Mahabharata, Shaani and Karna, amongst others, Swastik Production is now planning to venture into animation industry. The production house is working on the animation series which will be announced soon.
