Sun TV Network to invest Rs 300 crore in launch of Bengali, Marathi GECs

MUMBAI: Sun TV Network will invest Rs 150 crore each in launching Bengali and Marathi general entertainment channels (GECs) Sun Bangla and Sun Marathi. Sun Bangla is slated to launch on 3rd February while Sun Marathi is expected to launch in FY20.

“We will invest Rs 150 crore in our Bengali GEC. A similar amount will be invested in the Marathi GEC which is expected to go on air over the next one year,” Sun Group CFO SL Narayanan said during a press interaction in Kolkata.

According to Narayanan, the Rs 150 crore will be invested in content, distribution and marketing. Being a cash-rich company, the investments will be made from internal accruals.

He expects Sun Bangla to break even in the next two years. Once the break-even happens, the company will expand into other genres. The company is targeting a 10% market share.

“As of now, our focus area is the Bengali general entertainment channel. We are looking at a substantial market share and by the end of the second year, we should break-even here,” he said.

Narayanan stated that Sun Bangla is Sun TV Network’s first foray outside South India. The next channel on the block is Sun Marathi. “Sun Bangla will be our first major regional foray outside of South India. We also have plans for a Marathi channel,” he stated.

As reported earlier, both Sun Bangla and Sun Marathi will free to air (FTA) channels in the new pricing regime.
