Star Sports retains Premier League rights for TV, digital till 2022

MUMBAI: Star Sports will continue to air the English Premier League (EPL) in India as it has renewed the TV and digital rights deal for another three years till 2022. Star Sports will broadcast more than 250 Premier League games live across the network and beam all 380 games live on Hotstar.

The earlier three-year deal was worth $99 million or $33 million/year. This was a reduction from the $145 million that Star Sports’ predecessor ESPN Star Sports (ESS) had paid for the previous three-year deal.

Star Sports CEO Gautam Thakar said, “We are excited to continue our partnership with the Premier League and are proud to showcase the best of football on Star Sports. As the Home of sports, we are delighted to bring the Premier league to passionate fans in India and look forward to many fantastic seasons of football in the years ahead.”

Premier League director broadcasting Paul Molnar said, “We look forward to continuing to work with Star to make the best Premier League action available to the many passionate football fans in India who closely follow our clubs and the competition.”

As part of building the footballing ecosystem in India, Star Sports, through Select FC – An exclusive fan club for football fanatics, will continue to host special match screenings and Legend meets for fans across the country. In addition to bringing all the Live action, Star Sports will continue with its rich list of non-live programming by bringing daily shows such as Fantasy Premier League, The Football Show, FanZone, PL Kick-Off etc.

The league will continue to showcase the talent of Kevin De Bruyne (Man City), Mo Salah (Liverpool), Paul Pogba (Man United), Alexandre Lacazette (Arsenal), Harry Kane (Tottenham) on the field with Pep Guardiola (Man City), Jurgen Klopp (Liverpool), Unai Emery (Arsenal) and Ole Gunnar Solskjær (Man United) orchestrating the team movements from off the field.
