Star India-owned Hotstar to come up with new subscription model soon
MUMBAI: Star India-owned video on demand (VoD) platform Hotstar will be unveiling a new subscription model soon, a senior company official has said. Without getting into the details, Star India EVP and Head Hotstar Original Content Nikhil Madhok said that the new subscription model will be unveiled in 10 days’ time.
“We will be unveiling a whole new subscription model in terms of how people can access. So, maybe wait for another 10 days we will have all the news out,” Madhok told TelevisionPost.com.
Currently, Hotstar has two premium subscription plans. This includes a deeply discounted yearly plan for Rs. 999 or a monthly recurring plan for Rs. 199. The Rs. 199 plan comes with a 7 day trial period.
The premium membership grants access to all premium titles. In addition to premium titles, premium members will also get access to all Live Sports, including Cricket, Premier League, F1, Tennis and many more.
The platform also has an All Sports plan which was introduced with Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018. Priced at Rs 299 for a year, this plan enables users to have unlimited
access to all Live Sports, including Cricket, Premier League, F1, Tennis and many more.
The launch of new subscription model will coincide with the introduction of Hotstar Specials label which will house the original digital content being rolled out by the platform. The first show to go live under the new label is the docu-drama ‘Roar of the Lion’ with former Indian captain MS Dhoni which will launch on 20th March.
The docu-drama is being produced by Deepak Dhar-helmed Banijay Asia and Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s Dhoni Entertainment. The two have also collaborated to create content across genres.
Talking about the show, Madhok said that the show will be little different from what users are used to see on TV as well as over the top (OTT) platforms.
‘Roar of Lion’ is a story about IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and how the franchise scripted a comeback after being banned for two years. “While everyone knows on the surface, what happened, but real stories and the emotions that the team fell through the only went through and how they plotted their comeback,” Madhok stated.
He also stated that the name Hotstar Specials has chosen carefully as Hotstar as a platform always had original content that aired first on the Star India network channels.
“One of the one of the reasons why we call this Hotstar Specials is because as far as original is concerned, in some sense, Hotstar always had original content. Star network produces original content every single day almost hundred episodes across the in nine languages in which we operate,” Madhok stated.
According to Madhok, the idea behind creating Hotstar Specials is to cater to the content needs of the mobile users. He also stated that Star spent the first couple of years building scale for Hotstar. After years of hard work, the platform has attained scale with almost 15+ crore people watching content on Hotstar every month. “And now with this scale we are gearing up the next leg of innovation,” Madhok said.
With Hotstar Specials, the platform plans to tell stories which are very big and bold and also very India at heart. “Hotstar as a platform, which is also global platform, but we’re very focused that we want to tell stories which are Indian for Indians. And those stories can travel to the rest of the world globally and be accessible to people who want to watch it,” he added.
He also informed that Hotstar will be producing content in regional languages and the first piece of original content will start off somewhere towards second half of this year.
