Star India launches SD version of Star Gold Select HD

MUMBAI: Broadcaster Star India has launched the standard definition (SD) version of its premium Hindi movie channel Star Gold Select HD. The target audience of the channel is 22-40 SEC AB HSM Metros and 1 million+ markets (Males & Females).

Like its HD sibling, Star Gold Select also follows the same format of one break film. The tagline of the channel is ‘Hazaaron Kahaniyaan. 1 Interval’, which translates to thousands of stories, one break.

“Star Gold Select SD launched in June, 2017. It has the same proposition as the HD version of the channel. Every movie on the channel plays only with 1 intermission, a category-first offering. From this unique proposition, the channel derives its tagline, Hazaaron Kahaniyaan. 1 Interval,” Star India EVP and GM Hindi movies cluster Hemal Jhaveri.

The channel, which is priced at Rs 7.77 on a la carte basis, launched on Tata Sky and other platforms. This will be Star’s sixth Hindi movie channel after Star Gold, Star Gold HD, Star Gold Select HD, Star Utsav Movies, and Movies OK.

The broadcaster has distinct positioning for each channel. Star Gold has been positioned as the ‘Home of Block Busters’ while Movies OK is a channel targeted at young Indians. Star Gold Select, on the other hands, is a channel for the discerning audience who enjoys meaningful cinema.

Star Gold Select had recently aired the classic film Mughal-e-Azam’ with a special add-on service created in partnership with the select direct to home (DTH) operators. As part of the association, the movie was available for viewing in colour as well as black & white (B&W) mode on the add-on service.

Launched in March 2017, Star Gold Select HD aims to serve curated, meaningful stories from Indian cinema on television to a discerning audience. It is targeted at the upper end of the pay TV segment and plays a select library of films.

Star, which operates 26 HD channels in different genres, sees HD channels as a big driver of pay revenues. Star’s first premium HD channel under the ‘Select’ brand was Star Movies Select HD, which targets upscale audiences with a proposition of 365 movies for 365 days. Star Movies Select HD was launched in July 2015.

More than a year later, it launched Star Sports Select HD1 and HD2 by moving all its premium international content like EPL, Bundesliga, Grand Slam Tennis and F1 to the two channels. Recently, Star had also launched SD versions of Star Sports Select HD1 and HD2.
