‘Sanju’ collects Rs 120.06 cr to become highest weekend grosser of 2018

MUMBAI: Rajkumar Hirani’s biopic on Sanjay Dutt ‘Sanju’ has become the highest weekend grosser of 2018. The film has collected Rs 120.06 crore at the Indian box office over the weekend.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted saying the film did a brisk business during the weekend as it collected Rs 38.60 crore on Saturday and Rs 46.71 crore on Sunday.

The movie became the highest opener of 2018 with a first-day opening collection of Rs 34.75 crore beating Salman Khan-starrer ‘Race 3’, which had collected Rs 29.17 crore on the first day of its release.

‘Sanju’ also surpassed Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone’s epic drama ‘Padmaavat’ which had recorded a weekend business of Rs 114 crore. ‘Padmaavat’ had the advantage of releasing during the 5-day extended weekend.

‘Sanju’ is the seventh film to enter the Rs 100 crore club after ‘Padmaavat’, ‘Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety’, ‘Raid’, ‘Baaghi 2’, ‘Raazi’ and ‘Race 3’.

Starring Ranbir Kapoor, the film follows the various phases of Sanjay Dutt’s life. The cast also features Paresh Rawal as Sunil Dutt, Vicky Kaushal, Manisha Koirala as Nargis, Dia Mirza as Manyata Dutt, Sonam Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Jim Sarbh in pivotal roles.

At the global box office, ‘Sanju’ has become the fourth highest grosser with a collection of $24.7 million in its opening weekend. ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ has crossed the $900 million mark at the global box office.
