Sanjay Gupta quits Star/Disney India to join Google India

MUMBAI: Star and Disney India country manager Sanjay Gupta has quit the company to join Google as its new country manager and vice president of sales and operations for India.

In his new role, Gupta will drive Internet adoption among consumers and businesses and accelerating innovation. Based in Mumbai, Gupta will assume his position next year and will work with the teams based in Gurgaon, Hyderabad, and Bangalore.

“Our Indian operation is important and strategic for its own sake but also for the innovation which then feeds breakthroughs elsewhere in Google. By combining Gupta’s expertise, experience and leadership with our teams, we can build further on our existing efforts in this highly dynamic, competitive and exciting digital economy,” said Google President, APAC Scott Beaumont.

“This will provide an opportunity to leverage the power of technology to solve some of India’s unique challenges and make the Internet an engine of economic growth for people and communities,” Gupta said.

Gupta had spent over 10 years at Star. He joined the company as COO and was recently given the charge of the combined Star/Disney India business.

He has been a driver of Star’s growth journey by taking bold risks, innovating branded entertainment and introducing new content genres across regions. He has been instrumental in expanding traditional television content to digital platforms through Hotstar, overseeing the adoption of HD channels and creating India’s first media company powered by technology.

He has been deeply involved in building the sports business through the acquisition of rights for marquee content like IPL, ICC and BCCI, and re-invention of sports with the launch of leagues in kabaddi and football.

Before Star, Sanjay was the Chief Marketing Officer of Bharti Airtel, running marketing, sales, and distribution. Prior to Airtel, Sanjay worked at Hindustan Unilever where he led marketing for two of the company’s largest segments, Oral Care and Home Care.

A post-graduate from IIM Calcutta, he brings in over 20 years of experience across categories.
