Prasar Bharati to initiate action against Dish TV for blocking DD National: Shashi Shekhar
MUMBAI: Public broadcaster Prasar Bharati will initiate action against direct to home (DTH) operator Dish TV for blocking DD National, CEO Shashi Shekhar Vempati has said.
Replying to a viewer’s complaint on Twitter of Dish TV blocking DD National, Dish TV tweeted, “As per the order of the Hon’ble supreme court, DD National will not be available on the match days of the ongoing series.”
In response to Dish TV’s tweet, Vempati stated that the DTH operator’s move is “patently illegal and violative of Mandatory Carriage”. “We will be initiating action,” he added.
The public broadcaster has been receiving several complaints on Twitter about DD National being blocked by distribution platform operators (DPOs). Following this, Prasar Bharati had urged the DPOs to unblock the live-stream of DD Sports.
In his earlier tweet, he wrote, “Advisory! Do Not Block DD Sports. @TataSky, @HathwayBrdband, @officiald2h, @SUNDIRECTIndia, @DishTV_India, @airtelindia.”
Doordarshan has introduced dual streams for the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. This has been done to avoid blank screen on DD Sports channel on private DTH and cable MSO platforms during the live telecast of cricket matches.
The first stream telecasts the matches live and will be available only DD Free Dish and DD’s Terrestrial Network. The second stream carries a live studio-based program for the entire duration of all matches. The second stream has been made available on all private DTH and private cable MSO platforms apart from YouTube.
According to a Supreme Court verdict, Prasar Bharati cannot carry the live telecast of the sporting events of national importance on private cable and DTH platforms. As per Sports Act 2007, the live telecast of such events can only be carried on DD’s terrestrial and DD Free Dish platforms.
