Monika Shergill quits Viacom18’s Voot to join Netflix India
MUMBAI: Monika Shergill has quit as Viacom18 Digital Ventures EVP and head content to join Netflix India as head, series, international originals. The development was confirmed by Netflix through a statement.
“We can confirm that Monika Shergill will join Netflix as Head, Series, International Originals, Netflix India,” the company said in a statement.
Shergill replaces Netflix India creative executive Simran Sethi, who had quit the company recently. According to media reports, Netflix wants the executive to be based out of Mumbai. However, Sethi didn’t want to move to India from Los Angeles for personal reasons.
A seasoned media professional, with over two decades of experience as a Journalist, Creative Producer & Network Executive, Monika joined Viacom18 Digital Ventures as a key member of the start-up team tasked to set up Viacom18’s video on demand (VoD) service Voot.
As the content head, Monika’s role is to run the VoD platform’s content strategy with over 50,000 hours of content and grow the monthly active user base and watch time, through content and strategic innovations. Monika oversaw promotions for the platform, and the publishing strategy for the content, across app and web.
Prior to Voot, Monika headed the network non-fiction programming & strategy at Star India, where she also helmed the biggest network multi-lingual content series, `Satyamev Jayate’, for Star Plus and other network channels. Monika has worked across genres in all major broadcast networks, including Sony Entertainment Television (SET) and Zee TV, in leading programming roles.
A journalist at heart, she started out with environment television reporting & documentaries. She was a correspondent for the Green Oscar winning environment series, ‘Living on the Edge’, reporting on social & environmental issues.
In her media career spanning two decades, from a reporter to a content strategy and programming head at leading entertainment networks, Monika has explored the entire gamut of content creation and commissioning.
