IPL franchises retain 18 players for season 11
MUMBAI: The Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises have retained a total of 18 players for the 11th season of the cash-rich tournament. CSK, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Daredevils have retained the maximum of three players. On the other hand Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals retained just one player.
List of players retained:
Chennai Super Kings: MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja
Delhi Daredevils: Rishabh Pant, Chris Morris, Shreyas Iyer
Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah
Kolkata Knight Riders: Andre Russell, Sunil Narine
Kings XI Punjab: Axar Patel
Royal Challengers Bangalore: Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Sarfaraz Khan
Rajasthan Royals: Steven Smith
Sunrisers Hyderabad: David Warner, Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Before retention, each team had an auction purse of Rs 80 crore. That purse will now reduce depending on players retained. For instance, Dhoni will cost the CSK franchise Rs 15 crore in terms of the auction purse deduction. Raina will cost Rs 11 crore and Ravindra Jadeja will cost Rs 7 crore. For Rajasthan since just one player was retained Rs. 12.5 crore is deducted from their auction purse.
Punjab and Rajasthan who retained just one player each, have a purse of 67.5 Crore ahead of the auction. Kolkata and Hyderabad which retained two players have a purse of 59 Crore. Royal Challengers Bangalore has Rs 49 crore to spend. CSK, Delhi Daredevils, and Mumbai Indians will have a purse of Rs 47 crore.
It is worth noting that Kolkata Knight Riders has not retained Gautam Gambhir While Royal Challengers Bangalore has not retained Chris Gayle. Whether or not they use their Right To Match cards during the auction later this month in Bangalore for these players remains to be seen.
Some players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Steve Smith pick themselves. CSK continued with its strategy of retaining the core of its team. It will now look to build around this come auction time. Mumbai Indians had the tricky situation of wanting to but not being able to retain a lot of cricketers. It is surprising that Delhi retained three players given that the franchise has been performing poorly for a while now. Meanwhile, Delhi has appointed Ricky Ponting as their coach. Kings XI Punjab is looking to build a team around youngsters.
