Indian broadcasters gear up for Mipcom 2018 with strong content slate
MUMBAI: Indian broadcasters Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI), IndiaCast (TV18/Viacom18), Star India, and ZEEL are all geared to participate in entertainment content marketplace Mipcom 2018 which takes place in Cannes, France from 15-18 October.
IndiaCast, the content monetisation arm of TV18/Viacom18, will be presenting a strong slate of shows at Mipcom. The company’s slate includes ‘Naagin 3’, ‘Silsila Badalte Rishton Ka’, ‘Bepannah’, and the newly launched ‘Dastaan-e-Mohabbat: Salim Anarkali’.
“While our content is symbolic of the core culture and diversity of India, our approach has always been global. Viacom18/IndiaCast brings you unique stories of love, relationships, drama, and mystery,” said Viacom18/IndiaCast senior VP of international business and syndication Debkumar Dasgupta.
ZEEL will head to the Mipcom with English lifestyle content from the US and its popular Indian series like ‘Kumkum Bhagya’ and ‘Kundali Bhagya’ along with the new premiers.
ZEEL chief business officer, international ad sales, global syndication, and production Sunita Uchil noted that Mipcom has always been a very strong market for Zee.
She added that this year the broadcaster is highlighting our new blue-chip, premium documentary ‘The Life of Earth from Space’. This series was done as a co-pro with Smithsonian Networks and produced with Talesmith U.K. It is about the fascinating history of the earth, from inception to the present, utilising the latest technologies including 4k cinematography and HD cameras.
Apart from ‘Kumkum Bhagya’ and ‘Kundali Bhagya’, the other shows being showcased at the content marketplace are ‘Tujhse Hai Raabta’, ‘Yeh Teri Gaaliyaan’, and ‘Guddan – Tumse Na Ho Payega’.
She noted that the appetite for Indian content is growing overseas. ZEEL syndicates its content to over 70 countries in more 25 languages to varied platforms.
“We see more buyers asking for more Indian content to add to their line-ups. Another way to grow our markets is by co-productions between India and other countries. Last year, we produced and aired a successful modern, sophisticated drama series between UAE/ India and the Ivory Coast with leads and filming from both countries called ‘Khwaabon Ke Darmiyaan’,” Uchil stated.
Star India will showcase its newly launched show ‘Kasautii Zindagi Kay’ which features the story of two star-crossed lovers who meet and separate time and again as they get entwined in a web of love and revenge.
The line-up also includes ‘Kullfi Kumar Bajewala’ and ‘Love Ka Hai Intezar’. The former focuses on a musical prodigy on a journey to find her estranged father while the latter centers on an actress who falls in love with a prince.
“Star India is the leading broadcast network in India, and any new show from Star India generates considerable interest in international markets as well. Star India collaborates very closely with some of the biggest production houses in India, with a constant focus on stories that inspire,” said Star India president Gurjeev Singh Kapoor.
While Sony Pictures Networks India’s (SPNI) content slate is not known, the broadcaster is looking forward to Mipcom 2018.
“Mipcom provides broadcasters a platform to reach foreign producers and give them the opportunity to use a powerful compelling story and localise it, thereby making it more suitable for the local audience,” an SPNI spokesperson said.
“With a steady supply of good quality content with great production values coupled with compatibility across platforms and languages, Indian content is a great option for overseas markets.”
Over the top (OTT) platform Eros Now will be premiering its original series ‘Smoke’ at the event under the Made in India Originals category. The only Indian web series to be showcased in Cannes this year, ‘Smoke’ is a crime drama that will take audiences on a thrilling and eye-opening journey set in the underbelly of Goa. The series will be available for binge viewing from 26 October.
