India will be among top 3 countries in wired broadband service: Ambani
MUMBAI: Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) chairman Mukesh Ambani has said that India will leapfrog to become the top 3 country in the wired broadband space at furious space that will surprise the world.
Ambani’s telecom company Reliance Jio has launched wired broadband service JioGigaFiber which is targeting 50 million customers in a few year’s time. The company has acquired controlling stakes in cable TV companies DEN Networks and Hathway Cable and Datacom to realise its vision of catapulting India into a top 3 market in wired broadband.
The RIL chairman said that the country has an opportunity to replicate the success it achieved in becoming the world’s largest mobile data consuming nation.
“With JioGigaFiber, we have now begun an ambitious push in fixed broadband through Fiber-to-the-home and premise. Jio is committed to building a deep-fibre network across the country… and ensuring that every premise is connected with the highest quality network,” Ambani said during a speech at the Indian Mobile Congress.
He added, “I believe India will rise from a lowly 135th rank to be amongst the top three nations in fixed broadband at a pace that will surprise the world.”
JioGigaFiber, he said, will offer complete fixed-mobile convergence where Indians will travel seamlessly between mobile and fixed broadband networks 4G and 5G when on the move and Wi-Fi when indoors.
Ambani noted that India has moved from 155th rank in mobile broadband penetration to being the number 1 nation in mobile data consumption in the world… in less than two years. This, he said, is the fastest transition anywhere in the world from 2G/3G to 4G.
“By 2020, I believe that India will be a fully-4G country and ready for 5G ahead of others. Every phone in India will be a 4G enabled phone and every customer will have access to 4G connectivity,” he stated.
JioGigaFiber will rolled-out across 1,100 cities simultaneously. The service will provide 1.1 terabytes (TB) of free data at 100 Mbps speed. Jio GigaFiber will have its own special router called Jio GigaRouter besides a set top box (STB) Jio GigaTV that will allow customers to place voice calls, and allow for media sharing as well.
It will also offer ultra-high definition (UHD) entertainment on large screen TVs besides multi-party video conferencing, voice-activated virtual assistants, virtual reality gaming and digital shopping.
