IMAX inks agreement with INOX, Cinépolis for 9 new IMAX theatres
MUMBAI: IMAX Corporation has signed two new deals with multiplex chains INOX Leisure and Cinépolis India for 9 new IMAX theatres to be installed in new complexes across India. The announcement follows a recent 5-theatre agreement with PVR Cinemas in February.
The deals mark 14 new theatres for the company since just the beginning of 2018 and nearly doubles its contracted footprint since this time last year to 40 theatres.
The agreement with INOX is for five new IMAX theatres. The theatres will be added to new complexes, with two located in the city of Delhi and one theatre each located in the cities of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Gurugram. The deal brings IMAX’s total number of contracted theatres in India to 40, with 15 currently open and 25 contracted to open.
Inclusive of today’s agreement, INOX has contracted for a total of 10 IMAX theatres, with two open and eight scheduled to open. INOX currently has an IMAX theatre open in Mumbai and another in Bangalore, both of which opened in 2017. With this deal, INOX will add new IMAX theatres to some of India’s most prominent commercial developments, including a standalone IMAX theatre at the iconic Paras Theatre location in the heart of South Delhi and a theatre at the Reliance Convention Centre and Retail in Bandra Kurla Complex – Mumbai’s prestigious business district.
Cinépolis has signed an agreement for four new IMAX theatres in India. The IMAX theatres will be located in new complexes in the cities of Bangalore, Kolkata as well as Navi Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram, marking the first-ever IMAX theatres in these latter two markets.
Cinépolis opened its first IMAX theatre in 2004 in Mexico City and today the exhibitor has contracted for a total of 31 IMAX theatres, with 23 in operation across eight countries. In India, Cinépolis has six contracted IMAX theatres, with a theatre open in the city of Pune, which is typically among the highest-grossing IMAX sites in the country, as well as a successful theatre open in the city of Mumbai.
