Eros Now to focus on three content buckets

MUMBAI: Video streaming platform Eros Now will focus on three content buckets as it looks mop-up more paid subscribers in the highly fragmented Indian over the top (OTT) market.

The three content buckets are on form episodic originals, original films, and short-form content. The streaming platform is all to release its first original film ‘Meri Nimmo’ in partnership with Anand L Rai’s Colour Yellow Productions.

“We will be focussing on three simple buckets long-form episodic originals, original films like ‘Meri Nimmo’, and short-form content,” Eros Now COO Ali Hussein said in an interaction.

Hussein also said that the company has not decided on the theatrical release or TV syndication for the film. The company has two more digital-first films in the offing. One is a Tamil horror film followed by a Gujarati film.

He also said that the web original shows will start rolling out from June-July. The platform also has an aggressive movie slate. “We are planning to come out with at least 8 shows. We will also have an extensive movie slate,” he added.

Eros Now has digital rights for 10,000+ films and perpetual rights for 5000+ films. Currently, the platform has 20+ originals in the production stage. The library also includes 100+ TV shows.

Some of the originals that will stream on the platform include Smoke, Sidehero, Toffee, Swarajya, Flip, Minerva Mills Malady, Lost and Blue Oak Academy.

In terms of language, Eros Now has Hindi (20%), Tamil (24%), Telugu (19%), Malayalam (11%), Kannada (16%), and other languages including Marathi, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Gujarati, Rajasthani, and Urdu films (10%).

The OTT platform enjoys high reach courtesy its partnerships with telcos like Reliance Jio, Vodafone, Airtel, and Idea. It also has distributions tie-ups with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) like Samsung and LG, streaming services like Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, and Roku in addition to customer billing partnerships with wallets Paytm, MobiKwik, and Freecharge.

Eros Now has two subscription plans for Indian users. Eros Now Plus priced at Rs 49 per month offers unlimited movies & TV shows, music & music videos, and originals. Eros Now Premium priced Rs 99 per months unlimited movies & TV shows, music & music videos, HD and subtitles for movies, and originals (video shorts and episodic). It also allows offline playback of movies.

The platform has 80 million registered users and 5 million paid subscribers. The platform is expected to close FY18 with 6-8 million paid subscribers. The guidance for FY19 is 12-16 million subscribers.
