English, Hindi news genres see massive viewership spike in week 33 due to Vajpayee death coverage

MUMBAI: The viewership of top 5 English and Hindi news channel have seen a massive jump due to coverage of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s death on 16 August.

As per BARC data for week 33 for the period ending 17 August, the weekly impressions of top 5 Hindi news channels saw a whopping 42% jump in viewership to 74.6 crore from 52.7 crore in the previous week for urban + rural HSM.

Aaj Tak, Zee News, and ABP News had seen the biggest increase among the top 5 Hindi news channels.

Zee News dislodged News18 India for the second spot. India TV moved up to the fourth position while News18 India dropped to the fifth spot.

In urban HSM, Zee News replaced News18 India at the second spot. The latter fell to the fifth position while ABP News moved up a rank to number 4.

Zee News and News18 India swapped positions in rural HSM while the rest of the chart remained unchanged.

The viewership of the English news genre was up by a staggering 63% to 45.28 lakh impressions compared to 27.7 lakh in the previous week. Republic TV, Times Now and CNN-News18 were the biggest gainers.

In the English business news genre, BTVI was the only channel to see an increase in the weekly impressions. CNBC TV18 and ET Now had witnessed a drop in impressions.

CNBC Awaaz and Zee Business had also seen a drop in weekly impressions.
