DD’s English news channel breaks into top 5 in week 3 of BARC ratings

MUMBAI: Public broadcaster Doordarshan’s English news channel DD India is proving to be a tough competition for private English news channels. The channel has entered the top 5 list for the first time in week 3 of BARC ratings.

DD India has captured the top spot with 557,000 impressions just behind genre leader Republic TV’s 667,000 impressions. Times Now has got pushed down to the third position with 511,000 impressions. India Today Television and CNN-News have dropped to the fourth and fifth positions respectively. NDTV 24×7 has been pushed out of the top 5 table.

DD India, which started as an international channel, was repositioned an English news channel. The bilingual DD News became a Hindi news channel.

Prasar Bharati CEO Shashi Shekhar said that the viewership of DD India was always high, however, the difference now is that the viewership is getting measured by BARC.

“English News viewership of DD News was always high. It is now getting measured and reported separately by BARC India after 6 months of monitoring of DD India channel which has been earmarked as our exclusive channel for English News and Current Affairs,” he said in a comment on Twitter.

In Hindi news genre, News18 India and ABP news have risen by rank to the second and third positions respectively. Zee News has fallen to the fourth position. Aaj Tak retained its top position while India TV was at the fifth position.

The English and Hindi business news genre didn’t see any change in the pecking order.

In the English business news genre, the weekly impressions of the top 3 channels saw an increase. The weekly impressions of the two Hindi business news channels saw a decline.
