DD India pips Republic TV to become no. 1 English news channel in week 5

MUMBAI: After Times Now, DD India has become the second English news channel to break Republic TV’s monopoly in the English news genre, as per BARC data for week 5 for the period ending 1st February.

DD India, which has been repositioned as an English news channel, has become the number 1 channel in the genre. It had entered the top 5 list of the English news genre for the first time in week 3.

The channel has not only dislodged Republic TV from the number 1 position but has also taken a huge lead over its nearest rival in terms of weekly impressions.

DD India’s weekly impressions of 1.5 million are more than double of Republic TV’s 0.72 million. Times Now is in the third position with 0.6 million impressions. India Today TV has gone ahead of CNN-News18 with 0.35 million impressions while the latter is at the bottom of the table with 0.3 million impressions.

Republic TV has been the unchallenged leader of English news genre ever since it launched in May 2017. The channel has had a monopoly over the leadership position until Times Now seized the top position from the channel in week 31 of 2018.

The weekly impressions of all the news channel have seen a surge due to interim budget coverage. All the news channels had aired special programming around the interim budget.

The weekly impressions of the top 5 Hindi news channels have seen a surge even as the pecking order remained unchanged.

In English business news genre, CNBC-TV18’s weekly impressions more than doubled to 0.79 million up from 0.33 million in the previous week. ET Now’s weekly impressions shot up over three times to 0.5 million. BTVI also saw a moderate increase in weekly impressions. CNBC-TV Prime HD’s weekly impressions saw a decline.

CNBC Awaaz and Zee Business have also seen an increase in weekly impressions.
