Colors Marathi to refresh its programming line-up with new shows
MUMBAI: Colors Marathi is all set to bolster its programming line-up with the launch of four new shows between May and June. The first to launch is non-fiction show ‘Bigg Boss Marathi 2’ on 26th May. This will be followed by a fiction show ‘Laxmi Narayan’ on 27th May.
‘Bigg Boss Marathi 2’ will every Monday to Sunday at 9.30 pm while ‘Laxmi Narayan’ will premiere on 27th May airing every Monday-Saturday at 7 pm.
Commenting on the new line-up, Viacom 18 Business Head – Marathi Entertainment Nikhil Sane said, “Immediately post the launch of Big Boss Marathi 2 on 27th May, we will have a new serial ‘Laxmi Narayan’, a show on goddess Lakshmi and Vishnu. Plus there are a couple of new shows which are in the pipeline which we will launch between June and July.”
Recently, the channel had launched a new show titled ‘Jeev Zala Yedapisa’ airing Monday-Saturday at 8 pm. Sane said that the channel will completely refresh its content line-up by July.
Sane also informed that ‘Balumama Chya Navan Chang Bhala’ is the growth driver for the channel. Airing in the 7.30 pm slot, it became the first show on Colors Marathi to cross the 3 and 5 TVR marks and now it is the number one show on that slot.
The channel is also planning to launch a dance reality show as this is a missing piece on the channel, Sane said, “By and large fiction is dominating the space beside that we have experimented in non-fiction space. The singing show was missing in the genre for last 10 years we have got the singing show, we have our own brand and IP with ‘Sur Nava Dhyas Nava’ show and now ‘Bigg Boss’ has become our annual property. We are really hoping to get a dance show which is missing in this space for quite some time.”
The channel has four and a half hours of primetime programming every day starting from 6.30 pm and going all the way till 11 pm. It also airs movies during the weekend. Being part of Viacom18 network has helped it to premiere new movies. In the last 15 months, Viacom Pictures, the motion pictures arm of Viacom18, has released seven titles in Marathi including Aapla Manus, Cycle, Anil Kashinath Ghanekar, Bhai – Vyakti Ki Valli (Purvardha and Uttarardha) Kaagar, and Thackeray.
Sane opined, “It helped us to create the entire ecosystem, the films which we had, we could do the backward integration on our channels, we could promote it on our channel. The movies did very well in theatres and now they will be aired on the channel and this backward integration is really helping us.” He further stated that the studio will release six more films by 2020. In two years, the plan is to deliver a slate of 15 to 20 films.
Talking about Bigg Boss Marathi, Sane claimed that the non-fiction property has broken even in its first season itself. Generally, it takes at least three years for an expensive property to break-even.
“For Bigg Boss across the region, the business plan is made for three years and after three seasons only it can be said whether it is in profit or not. The good news that we have is Season 1 was a break even, that itself shows the popularity, the response and the performance of the show. For this season definitely, we want to do better than the last year.”
