Applause Entertainment ropes in Hansal Mehta to direct ‘The Scam’

MUMBAI: Applause Entertainment has roped in National award-winning director Hansal Mehta to direct a web series on 1992 securities scam titled ‘The Scam’.

The series is based on one of the most famous scams in the Indian financial markets. Applause Entertainment has acquired the right to the book – The Scam, which is authored by well-known journalists Sucheta Dalal and Debashish Basu.

Mehta is best known for his work in much-acclaimed films such as ‘Shahid’, ‘City Lights’, ‘Aligarh’ and ‘Omerta’. More recently, Mehta started his journey in the digital space as the creative producer of the much-acclaimed series ‘Bose: Dead/Alive’ featuring Rajkummar Rao.

Applause Entertainment CEO Sameer Nair, said, “Telling the story of the individuals behind India’s biggest financial scams will make for some riveting viewing. The collaboration with Hansal came as a happy surprise. Hansal Mehta is one of the finest directors we have in the country and we couldn’t have thought of a better person than him to direct and lead this financial drama.”

Mehta commented, “I had read the ‘The Scam’ many years ago and even toyed with the idea of making it into a film. The film never got made! I believe every story has its destiny. With our newspapers screaming scam every single day, I think the time for telling these stories was just right. When Sameer and I met to discuss what we could do together and he offered this subject to me I had to say yes! I have a lot of respect for Sameer and his knack of choosing content that is relevant and has the potential for mass viewership. I’m looking forward to bringing this thrilling drama to life!”

The first season of this multi-season show will showcase the Harshad Mehta’s story. Casting director Mukesh Chabbra is looking for the lead actor who will essay the role of Harshad in the series.
