AIADMK to launch its own newspaper, TV channel
MUMBAI: Tamil Nadu’s ruling party The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has decided to launch its own newspaper and television channel in Tamil.
The newspaper Namadhu Amma and the news channel Amma TV will be launched within 90 days.
Tamil Nadu chief minister and party co-coordinator Edappadi K. Palaniswami made this announcement at a meeting of the AIADMK legislators at the party headquarters on 3 January.
Maruthu Alagaraj, who was the editor of Dr. Namadhu MGR till about four months ago, has been asked to handle the daily newspaper.
Till now, Tamil Daily Dr. Namadhu MGR and TV network Jaya TV acted as the mouthpiece of the party. But the two have turned critical of the ruling party as they were being controlled by supporters of the rebel leader Dhinakaran.
Jaya TV, which was linked to late J Jayalalithaa, is controlled by her close aide VK Sasikala, who was sentenced to a four-year prison term in disproportionate assets case. Dhinakaran is Sasikala’s nephew.
Mavis Satcom, the holding company of Jaya TV, also owns and operates Jaya Max, Jaya Plus, and J Movie.
Despite, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) recommendations to the ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB) to bar government or government-owned entities and political parties from entering the broadcasting sector, political parties directly and indirectly own TV channels.
