‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ is top-rated film on TV since Jan ’16; ‘Dangal’ is at No. 2
MUMBAI: The world television premiere of Aamir Khan’s ‘Dangal’ had powered Zee TV to the top in the Hindi GEC hierarchy for the first time after BARC took charge as India’s lone TV ratings agency. In urban + rural Hindi-speaking markets, Zee TV’s impressions climbed to 67.94 crore in the week ended 26 May, up 35% from the previous week.
Despite ‘Dangal’ managing to fetch 1.63 crore impressions, it was Salman Khan’s ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ which was the top-rated movie on television since January 2016.
According to BARC data, ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ on Hindi movie channel Star Gold garnered 2.5 crore impressions across markets. The movie premiere helped Star Gold to better its previous record, also held by Salman Khan’s ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’.
‘Dangal’ on Zee TV grabbed the second rank on the chart, followed by Zee Cinema’s ‘Singh is Bliing’, which clocked 1.1 crore impressions, at No. 3.
Television channels are shortening the window of screening after the movie’s theatrical release. ‘Dangal’, which was released in December 2016, had a TV run in May. ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’, which was released in November 2015, was aired on television in February 2016, i.e. within three months of release.
‘Dangal’, which is the highest-grossing film at the box office worldwide, aired at 12 noon.
During the period of review, ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ was the only film on TV that garnered more than 2 crore impressions. ‘Dangal’ fell between 1.5 crore and 2 crore impressions. Five films—‘Singh is Bliing’ (Zee TV), ‘Sultan’ (Sony Max), ‘Baaghi’ (Zee Cinema), ‘Kanchana 2’ (Sony Max), ‘The State vs Jolly LLB 2’ (Star Gold)—fell in the bracket of over 1 crore impressions but less than 1.2 crore impressions, while three films—‘A Flying Jatt’ (Zee Cinema), ‘The Jungle Book’ (Star Plus) and ‘Dishoom’ (Star Gold)—garnered fewer than 1 crore impressions.
Top-rated movies since January 2016
Other than ‘Dangal’, Disney’s ‘The Jungle Book’ was the only top-rated film that premiered on a leading Hindi GEC (Star Plus) and made a cut in the top 10 Hindi movies aired since January 2016. ‘The Jungle Book’ garnered 96.39 lakh impressions.
Among the Hindi movie channels, Star Gold and Zee Cinema each had three films in the top 10, while Sony Max had two films that received a mention on the chart.
