SC grants stay on TRAI’s new tariff order

NEW DELHI: In what could be at least a temporary relief to broadcasters, the Supreme Court on Monday granted Star India a stay on the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) tariff order and interconnection regulation.

The apex court was hearing today Star’s special leave petition seeking a stay on TRAI’s tariff order and interconnection regulation. The bench of Justice Pinaki Chandra Bose and Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman agreed to stay the new tariff regulations.

Earlier, the Madras High Court had dismissed Star’s petition for a stay. Subsequent to this, the broadcasters published on their websites their Reference Interconnect Offers (RIO).

The Madras HC will hear on 12 June Star’s main petition challenging TRAI’s power to come out with tariff for TV channels.
