TRAI suggests Aadhar ID for internet, broadband, fixed-line subs

NEW DELHI: Internet, broadband and fixed-line subscribers will also need to provide Aadhaar card number for verification to subscribe to new connections, as per the recommendations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

TRAI has recommended laying down an appropriate format (customer acquisition form) for verification/re-verification of all subscribers (including fixed-line) of internet and broadband services and the adoption of Aadhaar-based e-KYC service, similar to mobile connections, for their verification.

The regulator had received a representation from the Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI) to extend Aadhaar-based e-KYC authentication to ISPs for broadband and internet connections also, as is currently the case with mobile connections.

“ISPAI has stated in their letter that the use of such service for authenticity of customers for broadband and internet connections will be fast and much authentic besides saving time and cost,” TRAI said.

While the government has prescribed CAF for verification of new mobile connections using Aadhaar-based e-KYC services and for re-verification of existing subscribers, TRAI noted that “so far this requirement has not been prescribed for customers of internet and broadband as well as fixed-line connections”.

The recommendation needs to be accepted by the Department of Telecom (DoT) before it comes into force.
