ZEEL restructures ops, ropes in Unilever’s Punit Misra as CEO of domestic broadcast biz

MUMBAI: ZEEL has roped in senior Unilever executive Punit Misra as CEO of its domestic broadcast business. Misra will take up the new role on 1 October and report to ZEEL MD and CEO Punit Goenka.

Prior to this appointment, Misra was serving as executive director, sales and customer development, for Hindustan Unilever (HUL).

Punit MishraMisra’s appointment is part of ZEEL’s wider restructuring plan to divide its business into five verticals.

ZEEL will have five verticals, namely broadcast, digital, films, live events and international business, as growth drivers. Each vertical will have a CEO.

With Misra’s appointment as broadcast business CEO, the only vertical without a CEO is live events.

The company already has a dedicated CEO for its international business in Subhash Chandra’s elder son Amit Goenka. ZEEL’s international business comprises 38 channels across five continents.

The digital business, which is housed under Zee Digital Convergence, had a CEO in Debashish Ghosh not very long ago. Ghosh had left the company in May to join LeEco as COO of its Indian content business.

The position of ZDC CEO is vacant as of now. ZDC owns and operates subscription OTT service dittoTV and VoD service OZEE.

Essel Vision Production, which has the company’s film and TV production business, is run by CEO Nitin Keni. Essel Vision, which currently produces Hindi, Marathi and Bengali films, plans to get into other regional markets like Telugu and Punjabi.

ZEEL’s domestic broadcast business comprises 34 channels across genres like GEC, movie, regional, English entertainment, lifestyle and music.

The company is looking to expand its channel bouquet by launching regional HD channels in Marathi, Bengali and Telugu markets. It is all set to launch its first movie channel in South India with Telugu movie channel Zee Cinemalu on 4 September.
