Zee Tamizh lines up special programmes for Tamil New Year

MUMBAI: To celebrate Puthandu or the Tamil New Year on 14 April, Tamil general entertainment channel Zee Tamizh has lined up special programming for its viewers with a mix of movies and special non-fiction shows.

Commencing the celebrations on Sunday, 13 April, the channel will air the international Tamil singing competition Superstar Challenge 2014. Held in Singapore, the competition saw participants from five countries including India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Canada and Singapore. Each country was represented by two singers who contested over three rounds such as ‘80s retro round, piano melody and latest hit songs.

The singers were judged by musicians Harish Radhavendra (India), Mohd Rafi (Singapore), ‘Apsaras’ Mohanraj (Sri Lanka), Prabha Balakrishnan (Canada) and ‘TMS’ Sivaguru (Malaysia). Representing India, ‘SaReGaMaPa’ winners Aravind and Abhilasha were crowned champions winning Rs 10 lakh cash prize. The musical event will be aired on 13 April at 3 pm on Zee Tamizh.

This will be followed by the premiere of ‘Endrendrum Punnagai’ at 5 pm. The breezy family entertainer, starring Jeeva, Trisha, Santhanam and Vinay, encompasses friendship, romance and an emotional father-son angle.

Celebrations for the harvest season will begin on 14 April at 8:30 am with a special one-hour show ‘Balu Mahendravin Kanavu Pattarai’. The show is a tribute to the legendary filmmaker Balu Mahendra. Directors such as Bala, Ameer, Ram and Vetrimaran, and actors such as Saritha, Thiyagarajan, Danush, Priyamani and Sasikumar will share their memories about working with the filmmaker.

This will be followed by a fun-filled chat show ‘Aaril Irunthu Arubathu Varai’ at 9:30 am with the rising star of Kollywood Sivakarthikeyan. Hosted by Anu Haasan, the show will feature an interaction with fans, pranks, fun activities with the actor, bytes and field-specific questions from cine industry friends and more. It will also see other celebs like Dhanush, Anirudh, Soori and Hansika give surprise phone calls for the actor.

The afternoon band on the channel will see the premiere of the action thriller ‘Jaggubhai Satellite’ at 1 pm.

Moving further into the day, evenings on the channel will start with another fun chat show with the cast and crew of the upcoming movie ‘Vaaya Moodi Pesalam’ at 4 pm. Actors Dulgar Salman, Nazriya and director Balaji Mohan will be taken through a series of spicy talks, games and activities with surprise guests visiting the team to double the fun.

A comedy entertainer ‘Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga’ will be aired at 5 pm.

Culminating the occasion at 9:30 pm will be a special musical event ‘Innisai Thamizh’ featuring prominent singers from the Tamil film industry rendering hit numbers from across various eras accompanied by the Lakhman Sruthi orchestra.
