Star Plus scales new heights in first week of the year
MUMBAI: Star Plus seems set on an upward swing in the New Year. The flagship Hindi general entertainment channel (GEC) from Star India has touched a new high with an almost 25 per cent share of the genre in the first week of the year ended 4 January.
The channel—its competitors also grudgingly admit—has caught the pulse of the Hindi-speaking market with its top fiction show ‘Diya Aur Baati Hum’. The show has clocked a peak viewership of 13.77 million TVTs (TV viewership in thousand), or 6 TVR in this fragmented market.
The pecking order of the channels in the genre remained unchanged, with Colors at No. 2 with 20 per cent share, followed by Zee TV (17.2%), SAB (13.9%), Life OK (12.4%), Sony Entertainment Television (10.2%) and Sahara One (1.4%).
The channels as they stand
Apart from ‘Diya Aur Baati Hum’, Star Plus got a boost from the telecast of the 4th Big Star Entertainment Awards. The three- and a-half-hour show garnered 12,369 TVTs or 5.84 TVR, totalling 41.27 GRPs (gross rating points).
Besides, Star Plus had two other shows in the top 10 most watched shows on television. The channel added 41.55 million gross TVTs in the week.
Colors, which had seen a major jump in the last week of last year on the back of the finale of ‘Bigg Boss 7’, saw a marginal dip this week. It was cushioned by the telecast of Golden Petal Awards, which added 30.77 GRPs over 9,964 TVTs.
While the premiere of Hindi feature film ‘Singh Saab the Great’ fetched the Viacom18 channel 7,657 TVTs or 22.32 GRPs, its flagship show ‘Comedy Nights with Kapil’ was among the top 10 shows with 8,973 TVTs.
Zee TV continued to be at the third spot with two of its shows—‘Jodhaa Akbar’ and ‘Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke’—in the top 10 list. The channel added 18.37 million GVTs to its previous week’s ratings.
SAB, the comedy entertainment channel from Multi Screen Media, once again started the year on a high. After Star Plus, it was the biggest gainer with addition of 30.48 million GVTs. Its tent pole property ‘Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma’ remained one of the most watched shows in the week.
Life OK, the second GEC from Star India, saw another soft week. Its recently launched property ‘Adventure of Hatim’ clocked 4,451 TVTs and became the top-rated show on the channel. Other top shows included ‘Shapath’, ‘Savdhaan India’ and ‘Mahadev’.
Still at No. 6, SET saw a further fall in viewership. In the previous week, it had added 16.9 million viewers. ‘CID’, ‘Crime Patrol’ and ‘Adaalat’ were its top-rated shows.
With only 36.16 million gross TVTs, Sahara One continued to flag at the bottom of the pyramid.
