Star Plus acquires format rights to US series ‘Lip Sync Battle’

MUMBAI: In a bid to strengthen its non-fiction format, Hindi GEC Star Plus has acquired the format rights to popular American series ‘Lip Sync Battle’. The show is scheduled to go on air soon. The date and time is not yet announced.

Star Plus is also going to air a fiction show which will mark the television debut of Bollywood actor Sanjay Kapoor.

‘Lip Sync Battle’ is based on an idea by Stephen Merchant and John Krasinski, in which celebrities battle each other with lip-sync performances. It has been used as a recurring segment on ‘The Tonight Show’ Starring Jimmy Fallon’ before it was developed into a separate show.

The Indian version of ‘Lip Sync Battle’ will be hosted by popular director-choreographer Farah Khan and comedian Ali Asgar. It will feature Bollywood A-listers competing with each other not only on their own, but they will also croon the iconic songs of other celebrities. The show will also feature fun-filled dance battles along with the lip syncing of iconic Bollywood numbers.

Currently, Star Plus has a non-fiction property, which airs every weekend at 8 pm. The channel is airing the third season of its dance reality show ‘Dance Plus’. This year, the channel has also aired ‘Dil Hai Hindustani’ and ‘Nach Baliye Season 8’.

Star Plus is also planning to bring back ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge’ in its fifth season, after a gap of almost nine years. Produced by Endemol Shine India, the show will be judged by Akshay Kumar, called the ‘Super Boss’ on the show. Earlier from 2005 to 2008, the show had aired on Star’s comedy GEC Star One, which has since been rebranded as Life OK.

On the fiction front, Star Plus will air a new show, ‘Ishq Gunaah’, in the coming months. This is yet another show featuring some some popular names.

To be produced by Vikram Bhatt, the show will mark the TV debut of Kapoor. The show will also bring back popular TV actress Niki Aneja on the small screen after a long time.

‘Ishq Gunaah’ will revolve around a middle-aged man with grown-up kids who falls in love with a girl much younger than him, but the twist comes when the girl’s mother is also in love with him. The leading role will be played by Sanjay Kapoor and Smriti Kalra.

Recently, the channel also launched two talked-about shows, ‘Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon 3’ and ‘Aarambh’. The channel premiered the third season of the weekday show ‘Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon 3’ on 3 July at 8 pm, while the big-budget weekend series ‘Aarambh’ was launched on 24 June at 9 pm.
