Sony acquires media rights to Nexa P1 Powerboat
MUMBAI: Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) is the broadcast partner for the inaugural edition of the Nexa P1 Powerboat, the Indian Grand Prix of the Seas, a global series in powerboat racing being launched by India’s leading sports management company Procam International.
This will be the first time in the world that powerboat racing will be telecast live. In addition, in a first for all sports, fans will experience a ‘second screen’ that will provide personalised content.
SPNI will bring the action from the shores of Mumbai’s natural amphitheatre, Marine Drive, during the race weekend. The telecast repertoire includes nine hours of live programming on Sony ESPN, Sony ESPN HD, Sony Pix and Sony Pix HD channels from 3 to 5 March.
The live telecast will run for three hours daily from 2 to 5 pm.
The event will also be live-streamed on SPNI’s VoD service Sony Liv.
The telecast for the Nexa P1 Powerboat, Indian Grand Prix of the Seas, is expected to set a global benchmark for the telecast of sport and entertainment around it. The content production by Initium Productions and Emmy Awards-winning British director Westbury Gillet has put together a global, hi-tech crew and equipment flown in from three continents. The event promises to be the most comprehensive coverage in the history of powerboating.
Another first for the sport is the introduction of the ‘second screen’ to take live sports experience to new heights, where fans will have access to images and information of what they want to watch at all times. The second screen is a gamified graphics interface to be followed live on an internet-connected device for real-time access to gamified positions, telemetric race data and analytics, in addition to the television broadcast.
SPNI EVP and business head, sports cluster, Prasana Krishnan said, “Powerboat racing is one of the latest adventure sports that is gaining momentum all over the world. The inaugural edition of the Nexa P1 Powerboat, Indian Grand Prix of the Seas, is a grand-scale international lifestyle event that will potentially transform the way marine sports is consumed in India. In addition, for the first time, viewers will get to experience the thrills of power boating with the live telecast of the Nexa P1 Powerboat, Indian Grand Prix of the Seas. We, at SPNI, are always looking to innovate by bringing in diverse content to our audience and are proud to be the global pioneers in presenting marine adventure sports live on the viewers’ television and digital screens.”
Procam International MD Anil Singh said, “Seeding a global sports series from India meant that we had to go above and beyond with our global telecast for the Nexa P1 Powerboat, Indian Grand Prix of the Seas. Everything we have planned in association with Sony is to ensure that we captivate the minds of every sports aficionado. We are proud to have Sony Pictures Networks India as our broadcasting partner, as they are the pioneers in broadcasting global sporting events and enhancing the experience for sports fans globally. We are also introducing the first ‘second screen’ format to sports enthusiasts in India, which we foresee as a game-changer in experiencing live sporting action.”
