Saurabh Tewari launches Tequila Shot Productions; to unveil 2 shows by June
MUMBAI: After splitting with his partner Abhinav Shukla and their production house Nautanki Films, Saurabh Tewari has now floated his own production company Tequila Shot Productions, with a focus on film and TV production.
“Basically love stories, the shows will be ready by May/June. We will be more aggressive and to sustain in the long run, the shows will focus on family and social content apart from love,” he said.
In addition, Tequila Shots will also foray into film production with a rom-com slated to go on floors in October 2014. The film will see the debut of Siddharth Sengupta, who has directed television series like ‘Balika Vadhu’, ‘Don’, ‘9 Malabar Hills’, ‘Tanaav’, ‘Karishma’, ‘Radha Ki Betiyaan Kuch Kar Dikhayengi’, ‘CID Special Bureau’ and more. The film is slated for release in the first half of 2015.
Another aspect of the production house will be to delve into digital content creation. Tewari reveals that his production house will launch a Tequila Shots YouTube channel by August to take the initiative forward.
On the digital front, the company will launch within the next five months three short films directed by independent people and sponsored by Tequila Shots Productions.
Tewari explained, “Digital is the future and that is the space where content needs to be more creative than expensive. There is a huge platform shift and a lot of audiences are now coming onto them. We plan on making a portal dedicated to this space and will sponsor independent guys who have a creative idea about making films.”
Work seems to be going ahead in full force for the new production house which is looking to cover all avenues.
It is to be noted that Tewari has been credited with setting up Nautanki Films with Bag Films’ Abhinav Shukla in 2011. The duo delivered some popular shows like ‘Madhubala’, the new series ‘Rangrasiya’ and also produced a feature film titled ‘Ekkees Topon Ki Salaami’.
Although many reasons have been attributed to their split, Tewari has maintained that the split was amicable as they wanted to pursue their individual goals.
As per well-placed sources, the two strong-minded men were faced with creative differences which could not be resolved and ultimately they had no option but to part ways in order to let each other grow in their own space.
However, Tewari will continue to be involved in the creative aspects of ‘Madhubala’ and ‘Rangrasiya’ as earlier while Shukla will look into the finances for the two shows.
He added, “Abhinav and I had a great stint running Nautanki Films together. The two on-air shows of Nautanki Films are extremely close to me and I will continue to oversee the entire creative aspect of these shows. The journey with Nautanki has been extremely enriching and I am happy that we created a brand that stood out.”
Beginning his career as a director of ad films, Saurabh Tewari went on to gain wide experience in television content production primarily as a writer that gave him a thorough understanding of the creative and production business.
In 2006, he moved to Zee Telefilms as assistant VP of programming for Zee TV. In 2007, he joined Viacom18 as part of the start-up team for the launch of Colors, assuming the role of associate VP and head of content fiction programming. From there, he moved on to Imagine TV as head of programming fiction in 2010.
