Reliance Jio grows content muscle, ups TV channel offering to 432
MUMBAI: Jio TV, Reliance Jio’s over-the-top (OTT) app, is growing its content muscle and building an offering that is in line with any direct-to-home (DTH) or cable TV service provider.
Jio TV now offers 432 channels across 15 regional languages, adding 20 more than the 412 that we had reported in January. This has been a rapid progression of TV channel additions, since the number of 368 channels that it was offering in September.
Besides live TV channels, Jio TV is the exclusive digital partner of Star India’s video-on-demand (VoD) service Hotstar. Jio TV users can also watch the Hotstar premium service.
The service, which started with 200 channels across six languages, now has ten categories across entertainment, infotainment, kids, movies, music, news, sports, business, lifestyle and devotional.
Jio TV has 139 news channels, 100 entertainment channels, 38 movie channels, 34 music channels, 20 sports channels, 27 infotainment channels, 23 kids channels, 12 lifestyle channels and 31 devotional channels. There are eight business news channels.
In the beginning of January, Jio TV had 130 news channels on the platform, 99 entertainment channels, 36 movie channels, 34 music channels, 27 devotional channels, 25 infotainment channels, 12 lifestyle channels and eight business news channels.
Jio TV now has an aggregate of 148 channels in Hindi, followed by English (62), Telugu (49), Tamil (39), Kannada (22), Malayalam (26), Marathi (17), Oriya (16), Bengali (14), Assamese (12), Gujarati (9), Bhojpuri (5), Punjabi (6), Urdu (6) and Nepali (1).
No other mobile TV has such a large offering as Jio. Idea and Vodafone offer over 112 and 70 channels respectively. Even Airtel has a slew of content services on offer.
Even Zee Entertainment Enterprises’ (ZEEL) live TV app dittoTV does not have channels from all the broadcasters like Star India.
Jio TV, on the contrary, has channels from virtually all the top broadcasters in India including Star India, ZEEL, Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI), TV18, Viacom18, Sun TV Network, Discovery Networks India, Turner India, TV Today Network, ABP News Network and NDTV.
Launched in September 2016, Reliance Jio was offering free voice calls besides 1GB of 4G data free to all its Prime customers. From 1 April, the telco started charging Rs 303 per month from Prime customers. The Prime customers will also have to pay a one-time fee of Rs 99. Jio has already amassed 72 million paid subscribers.
