News18 Assam/NE formally launched
MUMBAI: TV18-owned ETV News Network has formally launched a news channel called News18 Assam/NE targeting a viewership of 60 million people in Northeast India.
The channel, officially inaugurated by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at a glittering function on 24 June in Assam’s capital Guwahati, airs bulletins in Assamese and English.
The launch ceremony was graced by Union Petroleum & Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Drinking Water & Sanitation Minister Ramkripal Yadav, Union Tourism & Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma, among other dignitaries.
ETV News Network head Jagdish Chandra was also present on the occasion.
“The press being the fourth pillar of democracy has to remain as a watchdog and be sensitive to what’s happening around,” Sonowal said in his speech, adding that the media should project human values and dig out the truth.
Arguing that the media must carry all sections of people, irrespective of their caste, creed or religion to strengthen the edifice of democracy, the young chief minister argued that their voices must be heard loud and clear. He also called upon the media fraternity to remain vigilant to monitor the functioning of the government.
Assam, which borders Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet (China), Myanmar and Bangladesh, now supports satellite news channels such as News Live, DY 365, Pratidin Time, Prag News and Assam Talks, besides a number of cable news channels.
The company recently launched News18 Kerala and News18 Tamil Nadu.
