News channels see more than 20% dip in viewership in Week 41

MUMBAI: Hindi and English news channels saw a 20% dip in their viewership, according to BARC data for the week ended 14 October.

News channels across the board had seen a massive jump in viewership following the terrorist attacks at Uri and the retaliatory attack by the Indian Army on terrorist camps in the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK).

With the debate around surgical strike being overtaken by other developments, the viewership of news channels reflected the shift in emphasis.

While the viewership of the top four English news channels saw an average 25% drop, that of Hindi news channels shrank by 20%.

English news channels

Among English news channels, CNN News18 and NDTV 24×7 saw the highest drop at 29.9% and 29.6% respectively. Times Now lost 24.55% viewership over the previous week, while India Today Television’s viewership dipped 14.61%.

The English news genre did not see any dramatic change in the pecking order, except for the entry of BBC World News in the top 5. The channel dislodged NewsX from the fifth position.
