MTV ‘kills boring’ by reinventing ‘MTV Hero Roadies X2’
MUMBAI: Youth entertainment and music channel MTV India is back with its flagship reality show ‘MTV Hero Roadies’ in its 12th season with a new format aiming to ‘kill boring’.
With a view to making a deeper connect with the audiences, the show will commence in the holy city of Varanasi and will travel along the scenic route to culminate in the birthplace of the Ganges in Nepal. The show will premiere on 24 January, airing at 7 pm every Saturday.
After being associated with the show since its inception, Raghu Ram and Rajiv Laxman, the two faces of the cult show, will give this season a miss.
MTV India EVP and business head Aditya Swamy said, “We are always trying to redefine. If you get predictable every time, then the time is for a change. And before the audience tells you to change, you should change and be ahead of the curve constantly. I think it’s a new phase and we have had a great journey together. They are off to do other stuff and we are giving ‘Roadies’ a new face.”
Thus, the change in the format of the show will see the original Roadie Rannvijay Singh being joined by three new partners. Olympic boxer Vijender Singh, TV star Karan Kundra and Bollywood actress Esha Deol will be the three new gang leaders fighting it out to make their team win. Deol will be the first female judge to ever feature on the show.
Along with the gang leaders, another big surprise for the audiences and contestants is that participants this time will not just be competing against each other but will compete in gangs. Each ‘gang leader’ will pick five participants for their own gangs. These gangs and gang leaders will then compete with each other through a series of tasks to eliminate each other from the show. The gang leader, along with the gang member, who stays through the end, winning the maximum number of tasks, will be adjudged the winner.
“This is a landmark year for us. We have not just changed the format; we have ripped it wide open. This means the madness is back and it’s multiplied four times. We have three new faces on the show, and the fourth angle of madness is that we have given the contestant the power to choose. I think that reflects the time we live in where everyone feels empowered. We try to capture all of that with every season of the show that we do, trying to make it in a way that reflects the sentiment of the nation at that time,” Swamy mentioned.
He added that the show will be on air for the next 5.5 months and during that time it will have something new. The team will apparently start working on the next season of the show from August.
The auditions for the show were conducted across the four cities of Pune, Kolkata, Delhi and Chandigarh in the month of December. Following the audition episodes, the journey for Roadies X2 will begin in early February.
While the original Roadie Rannvijay looked for people with discipline, Vijender was on the lookout for people who were all heart. Karan’s focus was on grabbing the best strategists while Esha wanted people who had their eyes on the prize. Each leader chose several people from each city for their respective gangs which were then sorted down to five people per gang.
The show has Hero MotoCorp as the title sponsor yet again, with Vivo Smart Phone as the powered-by sponsor. This year the contestants will ride on Karizma ZMR.
MTV Hero Roadies X2 will witness a 360-degree promotion plan which includes an extensive online leg comprising the Roadies Battleground, PR activations, on-ground events and more.
