Disney set to launch India’s maiden chat show for kids
MUMBAI: Having earlier pushed the envelope through its differentiated content in the live-action space, Disney UTV’s flagship kids property Disney Channel is all set to launch a chat show, which, it says, is a first of its kind on a kids channel in India.
After taking a shot at long-form, live-action content through sitcoms like ‘The Suite Life of Karan and Kabir’ and ‘Best of Luck Nikki’, as well as a game show ‘Disney Q’, the channel will launch ‘Captain Tiao’ on 2 March.
The live-action, short-format show will have a thirteen-episode run in its first season and will air on Sundays at 10 am. The Sunday morning slot is a very critical time slot for channels in the kids genre.
Nine-year old Sadhil Kapoor, who has won accolades for his performance in ‘Devon Ke Dev Mahadev’, will host the show as ‘Captain Tiao’. Kapoor will interact with celebrities coming from different walks of life.
In the show, Sadhil Kapoor, aka Captain Tiao, will be seen throwing intriguing and funny questions at celebrities to put them in a spot. The questions range from their biggest childhood fears to their favourite snacks to guilty secrets and hilarious habits. The Q&A will be followed by Sadhil challenging the guests to entertaining tasks and daring them to beat him.
“Captain Tiao is the voice of children. He is innocent, extremely curious and isn’t afraid to ask a lot of questions, and is thus a true manifestation of childhood,” says Disney UTV director programming of kids network Devika Prabhu.
The new show is in line with the channel’s philosophy of offering different formats of shows to the kids and their families.
“We have produced short-format shows in animation and were encouraged by the response. Moreover, we have been doing long-format shows in live action, so we thought why not experiment with a short-format show in live action,” says Prabhu.
She also asserts that Disney is the first channel in the genre to bring such a format. “This is the first time any kids channel has produced a show of this kind. The moment the idea of a kid asking questions to a celebrity struck us, we decided that we will go ahead with it,” reveals Prabhu.
While discussions are still underway, some of the celebrities who have confirmed their appearance on ‘Captain Tiao’ are Mahesh Bhupathi, Jaaved Jaffrey, Kapil Sharma and Navjot Singh Sidhu.
The criterion for choosing celebrities for the show was simple—anyone who inspires the kids and someone the kids can look up to, whether in sports, entertainment or politics.
The fact that Disney UTV is part of an integrated media company made the task of roping in celebrities a lot easier, avers Prabhu.
