DD hikes reserve price of Freedish slots for news channels to Rs 6.5 cr

MUMBAI: After hiking the reserve price of non-news channels, Doordarshan’s free DTH platform Freedish has increased the reserve price of news channels to Rs 6.5 crore for the 36th e-auction to be conducted on 4 July.

Until the 32nd e-auction, the reserve price for news and non-news channels was the same at Rs 4.8 crore.

For the 33rd, 34th, and 35th e-auctions, DD Freedish invited only non-news channels for slot auctions. The reserve price for non-news channels was hiked to Rs 8 crore.

The participation amount for news channels is Rs 2.28 crore, while for non-news channels it remains unchanged at Rs 2.8 crore.

Earlier, DD had sold two vacant slots on its Freedish platform to English news channel NewsX and Hindi movie channel RT Movies on a pro rata basis for Rs 8 crore. The two vacant slots had gone unsold at the 35th e-auction on 25 May.

In the 34th e-auction, Sony Wah, Zee Anmol Cinema and 9X Jalwa had renewed slots at the reserve price of Rs 8 crore.

The 34th e-auction was conducted after DD Freedish had failed to find any takers for slots at reserve price of Rs 8 crore in the 33rd e-auction.

Interested channels will have to submit uplinking and downlinking permission from the MIB along with the application, apart from a participation amount of Rs 2.80 crore and Rs 2.2 crore for non-news and news channels respectively.

Successful channels will have to arrange their own IRD box in advance to place their channel on Freedish platform on time.

The participation fee drafts will be returned to the unsuccessful bidders within three weeks after the declaration of winning bids. The participation fee of the successful bidders will be adjusted in the third and final instalment of carriage fee.

If the successful bidder fails to place their channel on its allocated slot even after one month from the date of allotment, their allocation shall be treated as cancelled and the fee shall be forfeited.

Every successful bidder will have to sign an agreement and return it to Doordarshan in two copies within 15 days of the issue of the letter of allotment.

Successful bidders will have to pay 50 per cent of the total bid in two instalments of 25 per cent each plus service tax. The first instalment will have to be paid within one month from date of placement of channel, while the second instalment will have to be paid within four months from date of placement of channel.

The remaining amount will have to be paid within seven months from date of placement of channel after adjusting the participation fee and previous instalments + applicable Service Tax.

If any of the above instalments is not paid within the scheduled instalment dates, a penal interest @ 14.5% per annum will be charged from the due date of payment. The penal interest will be charged for the entire month for a default of 30 days or part thereof.

If the instalment along with the penal interest is not paid within 30 days from its scheduled due date, a 30 days’ notice shall be issued to the defaulter for discontinuation of channel.

In the event the channel does not pay the instalment with the accrued penal interest for two months within the notice period, the participation fee along with any instalment already deposited by the broadcaster to date will be forfeited and the channel will be discontinued from Freedish after the expiry of notice period.
