Comedy Central unleashes May-hem with nine new shows next month
MUMBAI: Viacom18’s English entertainment channel Comedy Central India will launch as many as nine new shows next month.
These include the Golden Globe winner ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’, the third season of ‘Suits’ and the game series ‘Wipe Out’. There will also be an Indian flavour in the line-up through two shows.
The action starts with the show ‘Wipe Out’, where the world’s largest obstacle course will be witnessed. Commencing on 5 May at 9 pm, the game show series will see contestants making their way through a giant obstacle course to win a cash price.
Having aired three back-to-back seasons of the legal drama ‘Suits’, Comedy Central now brings the final episodes of the third season from 5 May (Mon–Wed, 10 pm). Taking over ‘Suits’ will be the workplace comedy ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ which deals with a diverse group of detectives at the very edge of New York City. It will start airing from 19 May, Monday–Wednesday, at 10 pm.
This is followed by the second season of ‘The Mindy Project’ which also kicks off on 19 May and airs Monday–Wednesday at 10:30 pm. The title character is a gynaecologist who has to balance her personal and professional life in New York.
As far as late-night viewership is concerned, the channel will kick off ‘Sean Saves the World’ for the first time in India on 5 May at 11 pm. Airing Monday–Wednesday, the show will tell the story of the eponymous Sean who has to learn how to parent his 14-year-old daughter.
Following this is Jon Stewart’s daily talk show. This airs at 11:30 pm Monday–Thursday at 11:30 pm and will feature a lot of satire.
Content with an Indian flavour will also air through two shows. ‘The Kumars at No. 42’ kicks off on 8 May and airs every Thursday at 10 pm. The show is about Sanjeev Kumar, who is an aspiring chat-show host in Britain. He has celebrity guests coming to his house (No. 42) to talk to them, but it all falls apart when his family cut in on the action. The celebrity guests spend far more time speaking to the whole of Sanjeev’s family than the host himself.
9 May sees the second season of ‘Citizen Khan’ air every Friday at 10 pm. ‘Citizen Khan’ is the first South Asian sitcom that stars Adil Ray as Mr Khan. He is a self-appointed community leader that is passionate about cricket and uses his thriftiness to help make ends meet.
With regard to weekend content, the channel will air the famous improvisational comedy game show ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway’ at 9 pm on Saturdays from 31 May.
Viacom18 Media senior VP, GM, English entertainment Ferzad Palia said, “The channel’s objective has always been to bring fresh and funny content to viewers. Since launch, we’ve set out to expand our programming line-up year on year by bringing the most popular and globally renowned shows, be it contemporary or classics. This May, we bring viewers an award-winning, all-new primetime line-up that is sure to engage both loyal and new audiences”.
