Colors gains in a week of fall for Hindi GECs
MUMBAI: In a week when there was no special award show or movie premiere, viewership dropped for all the Hindi general entertainment channels (GECs), except for Colors.
The Viacom18 channel, which jumped back to the third spot, registered a gain of 22 million GVMs (gross television viewership in millions) in the week ended 12 July. Its most popular show, ‘Comedy Nights With Kapil’ scaled up the ratings chart while ‘Jhalak Dikhhla Ja’ also improved.
The fiction shows of the channel are yet to get a place in the top 10 fiction list, which is currently ruled by Star Plus (with the top three slots and overall six shows in the list) and Zee TV with three shows. Sab has one show (‘Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma’) in the list, according to TAM data for Week 28 (sourced from the subscribers) for the Hindi-speaking markets.
However, genre leader Star Plus saw a slump of 31 million GVMs during the week. In the previous week, the flagship channel of Star India had aired ‘Star Parivaar Awards’ which brought the channel gross viewership of 46.7 million.
Similarly, Zee TV, which lost the most (54 million GVMs), had grown in the previous week on the back of the premiere of ‘Main Tera Hero’ that fetched the channel a gross viewership of 73 million.
Life OK, the second GEC from Star India, once again fell to the fourth place by shedding 23 million GVMs.
SET and SAB saw a drop of 9 million and 28 million GVMs respectively, while continuing at fifth and sixth place.
Top 10 fiction shows
The top 10 shows included Star Plus’ ‘Diya Aur Baati Hum (9,510 TVTs), ‘Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai’ (8,412 TVTs), ‘Saathiya Saath Nibhana’ (7,909 TVTs) on top three positions. Zee TV’s ‘Jodha Akbar’ with fourth with 7,598 TVTs, followed by Star’s ‘Mahabharat’ with 7,066 TVTs, SAB’s ‘Taarak Mehta…’ with 6,460 TVTs, Zee’s latest entrant ‘Kumkum Bhagya’ with 6,261 TVTs, Star’s ‘Ye Hai Mohabbatein’ clocking 6,160 TVTs, Zee TV’s ‘Qubool Hai’ with 5,655 TVTs and Star Plus’ ‘Veera’ with 5,450 TVTs.
Top non-fiction shows
Colors’ ‘Comedy Nights with Kapil’ continued to be the number one show in the category with a jump in average viewership to 7,615 TVTs from 5,834 TVTs in the previous week. This was followed by SET’s ‘CID’ with 4,394 TVTs (4,145 TVTs in last week). Third was Colors’ other non-fiction property ‘Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa’ with 4,246 TVTs (3,323 TVTs last week). Zee TV’s ‘Cinestars Ki Khoj’ was fourth with 2,608 TVTs, down from 3,482 TVTs it garnered last week, while fifth was the new entrant, Colors’ ‘The Anupam Kher Show – Kuchh Bhee Ho Sakta Hai’, which debuted with 2,591 TVTs.
Star Plus’ reach was at 116.7 million, up from 116.6 million, followed by Zee TV at 108.5 million, down from 111.9 million, and Life OK at 106 million, down from 111.1 million in the trailing week. Colors was at 105.2 million, up from 104 million, SET was 99.9 million, up from 103.1 million and SAB was 84.6 million, down from 85.3 million.
Time spent per viewer
Star Plus’ TSV was at 173 minutes, down from 181 minutes previously, while Zee TV’s fell to 117 minutes from 128 minutes. While Colors’ TSV jumped to 98 minutes from 92 minutes, Life OK’s TSV dropped to 92 minutes from 95 minutes. Both SET and SAB’s TSV remained at 84 minutes in Week 28 as per TAM data (sourced from subscribers) for the Hindi-speaking markets.
