Balaji Tele working on dramas, Saaibaba on music reality for DD

MUMBAI: Leading television production house Balaji Telefilms, which acquired primetime slots on Doordarshan, is working on different genres which it is readying to showcase on the national channel from February.

Balaji Telefilms will have a youth-focused show, a love story and a daily family soap to fill up the three slots on Doordarshan.

The Ekta Kapoor-run production house bagged three half-an-hour slots each for 8–9.30 pm programming, Monday to Thursday. Balaji bagged two slots for Friday 8–9 pm programming.

DD National is currently airing Balaji’s ‘Pavitra Bandhan’, mythological show ‘Siya Ram’ and daily soap ‘Pammi Beauty Parlour’ during prime time on weekdays.

Saaibaba Telefilms, the only other production house to have won DD’s primetime slot auction, will produce music-focused fiction and reality shows for Doordarshan. While on weekdays it will have a music-led comedy show targeted at the youth, it will produce a music reality show for the weekends.

Saaibaba Telefilms, known for shows like ‘Antakshari’, ‘SaReGaMa’ and ‘Star Voice of India’, bagged three slots in the auction—one half-an-hour slot from Monday to Friday and two one-hour slots for Saturday and Sunday.

As reported earlier by, the two production houses secured 19 of the 34 weekday slots and two of the three weekend slots between themselves. This meant that 16 slots, including 15 weekday slots and one weekend slot, had gone unsold.

Balaji Telefilms won 14 weekday slots including 8-8.30 pm and 8.30-9 pm slots from Monday to Friday and 9-9.30 pm slot from Monday to Thursday.

Saaibaba Telefilms won five weekday slots and two weekend slots. The weekday slot is from 7.30 to 8 pm Monday to Friday while the weekend slot is from 8 to 9 pm – Saturday and Sunday.

The weekday slots received bidding in the price range of Rs 1,55,000–175,000 per slot and the weekend slots fetched Rs 327, 000 per slot. The bidding price was very close to the reserve price of Rs 1.5 lakh for weekday slots and Rs 3 lakh for weekend slots.

The two production houses will have to start providing programmes under the ‘New Content Acquisition Scheme’ from February 2017.

Doordarshan had floated a request for proposal (RFP) in November 2016 for sourcing content through a ‘two-bid process’ under the ‘New Content Acquisition Scheme’, inviting reputed and experienced producers/production houses to provide content for prime-time slots of DD National.
