Arnab’s Republic TV sees viewership erosion; blackout week for NBA-linked English channels
MUMBAI: Arnab Goswami-helmed Republic TV has been seeing its viewership erode since its debut week high, though all the while maintaining its leadership position.
In a week when most of the top English news channels were not measured by BARC India, Republic TV saw a 40.5% drop in impressions.
In the week ended 26 May, Republic TV saw its viewership erode to 1.01 million impressions compared to 1.7 million a week ago. This was the second consecutive week when the channel’s viewership fell.
In Week 20, Republic TV’s impression had fallen 19.55% to 1.7 million from the peak of 2.1 million it had garnered in its launch week.
The next week data will be interesting to observe. In the week ended 19 May, Times Now stood at No. 2 with 978,000 weekly impressions. This puts the channel very close to Republic TV’s viewership in the week ended 26 May.
For Week 21, the No. 2 channel in the English news genre by default was BBC World News with 190,000 impressions. The other three channels in top 5 were WION, NewsX HD and NDTV 24×7 in that order.
English news channels Times Now, India Today TV, CNN-News18 and NDTV 24×7 had walked out of BARC in Week 21 to protest against the viewership measurement agency’s decision to release data for Republic TV in Week 19 despite request by the News Broadcasters Association (NBA) against it.
The NBA had alleged that Republic TV was available on multiple frequencies, which gave it undue advantage over other channels. The association had requested BARC to hold back Republic TV’s ratings until the issue was resolved.
The NBA had also lodged a complaint against the channel with TRAI. TV Today Network had filed a case in the Delhi High Court, which got disposed of after a statement by Republic TV that it was classified in only news genre.
After much drama, the news channels decided to return to BARC by inserting watermark in their content from 27 May, which is the beginning of Week 22.
