Anil Ambani’s production arm ties up with Anurag Kashyap’s Phantom Films for TV, digital content
MUMBAI: After partnering for movies, Anil Ambani’s production company and Anurag Kashyap-helmed Phantom Films are getting together for creating entertainment content for television and digital media.
Big Synergy Media and Phantom Films aim to benefit from each other’s core expertise, grow their businesses and create a content production powerhouse.
The Ambani-controlled company, founded by Siddhartha Basu and Anita Kaul Basu, already produces factual entertainment content for TV. It will now dig into the creative talent pool of Phantom Films, set up in 2011 by Kashyap, Vikas Bahl, Vikramaditya Motwane and Madhu Mantena, to expand their fiction offering to TV and digital media outlets.
As for Phantom Films, which is a film production and distribution company, the alliance will allow it to expand into the TV content genre. The company has already got a contract with Netflix to produce the internet TV network’s first India original series. Based on the critically acclaimed best-selling novel ‘Sacred Games’ by Indian author Vikram Chandra, Netflix will produce a Hindi–English series in partnership with Phantom Films.
Phantom Films will also have access to Big Synergy’s expertise and reach in production of regional-language content across seven languages in the fiction and non-fiction space.
“This is a potent alliance of strong core capabilities which will immediately enable terrific synergies, to innovate and expand the kind of impactful content we can offer to the public,” said Siddhartha Basu.
Big Synergy has built its reputation as a leader in the field of factual entertainment, starting out as one of the country’s first independent TV production houses in 1988. The company has since been at the helm of producing some of the country’s most critically acclaimed and popular TV programmes such as the game show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ (KBC).
Keeping abreast of constantly changing viewership and the growth of regional markets, Big Synergy has incorporated top-of-the-line technology in creating content and programme ideas in line with market demands across India.
“Digital and out-of-the-box content is the future, and I am sure the association with Phantom will add to the advantage of Synergy, a company we have painstakingly nurtured over many years and continue its reputation for excellence, quality and consistency, with a fine range of new content,” said Anita.
Phantom Films has earned a reputation for producing some of India’s most path-breaking and engaging films in recent times.
Commenting on the alliance, Phantom Films co-founder Bahl said, “This is the most exciting and challenging times for content creators. With the experience and focus of Synergy, we hope we can together create path-breaking content for the new-age audience.”
Reliance ADAG-owned Reliance Entertainment already has an equal joint venture with Phantom Films. Under the deal, the JV will develop and produce 5–6 films every year, apart from distribution of films in India and overseas, and syndication of rights from a library containing 175 films.
