Airtel launches music streaming app Wynk
MUMBAI: Telecom major Bharti Airtel has ventured into the music ecosystem by launching its music streaming application Wynk.
With this launch, Airtel has become the first operator to introduce an over-the-top (OTT) mobile app in the Indian market, which will work across mobile operators, enabling customers to stream and download in an ad-free interface.
Wynk Music is stated to be a carrier-agnostic mobile app with over 1.7 million songs including Hindi, regional and international hits. Indian-language songs on the app include Hindi, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Bengali.
Bharti Airtel director consumer business Srinivasan Gopalan said, “With the proliferation of smartphones in the country, mobile phones have emerged as the most preferred platform when it comes to experiencing music the go and account for almost 85–90 per cent of total digital consumption. We are introducing this segment to Wynk, an innovative platform that blends technology and music and present a whole new dimension to music uptake in the country. Given our legacy with music and our strong smartphone network, we are certain that Wynk will offer the best-in-class user experience and become one of the most sought after app.”
The free-to-download app is available on the Android and iOS platforms from today. Other mobile users can download it from the Wynk mobile site. With the free version of the app, users can stream songs of their choice online and tune into internet radio. With Wynk Plus, users can access unlimited in-app song downloads and play music offline at Rs 99 on Android and Rs 60 on iOS. Airtel customers using Android phones will get a special introductory price of just Rs 29.
Wynk Freedom subscription at Rs 129 is available exclusively to Airtel customers in 3G circles using Android phones, which enables them to get all-inclusive unlimited streaming and download of music without incurring additional data charges.
The app will compete with the likes of Gaana and Saavn, which also offer music streaming services with various subscription packs.
Wynk claims to offer songs to suit every mood with easy discoverability of music through a simple and intuitive user interface. Customers can also listen to ad-free radio playlists curated by experts to suit different music preferences.
Airtel customers can pay for all purchases on the app using their Airtel balance or bill. Other customers have the option to pay through online banking.
Browsing on the app and mobile website is free and no data charges will apply. As an introductory offer, customers have been given the chance to experience the Wynk Plus and Wynk Freedom services absolutely free for the first month of their subscription.
