Airtel drops charges for international roaming

MUMBAI: Telecom major Bharti Airtel has announced the launch of its new international roaming (IR) packs that, the company claims, redefine the value proposition for customers travelling abroad.

The new IR packs will give customers the convenience of carrying their Indian mobile number and have 24X7 connectivity without worrying about high call and data charges. The packs will be available to both postpaid and prepaid customers.

The new IR packs will offer free incoming calls, free texts to India and ample data benefits along with free India calling minutes across all known destinations. Bharti Airtel has reduced the charges for calls to India and local in-country calls to as low as Rs 3 per min across popular destinations.

Customers can also continue accessing their emails, social media and websites on the go in a secure manner without having to wait for public Wi-Fi or free access.

The IR packs come with different range of validity period from one day and 30 days to a month pack, offering customers greater flexibility to plan their communication budgets when travelling overseas.

The one-day pack is designed for short/quick international trips and is priced around $10. This pack is particularly designed for business travellers who may be travelling to multiple destinations for very short durations.

The 30-day pack offers connectivity through long duration trips for around $75 and is loaded with data and India calling benefits. With the holiday season around the corner, Airtel is also planning to launch a $45 medium-duration pack with 10 days’ validity, by mid October.

The Rs 4,999 (appx. $75) pack for the US and Canada with 30 days’ validity offers 3GB data, unlimited incoming calls, 400 minutes of calls to India and unlimited texts to India. After pack data exhaustion, Rs 3/MB will be charged. All calls (after free minutes) to India and within local destination will be charged at just Rs 3/min.

The Rs 649 (appx. $10) pack for the US and Canada with one day validity offers 300 MB data, unlimited incoming calls, 100 min of India calling and unlimited number of texts to India. After pack data exhaustion, charge of Rs 3 /MB will apply. All calls (after free minutes) to India will be charged at Rs 3/min and all local calls within the country of travel will be charged at Rs 3/min.

ajai puriCommenting on the new plans, Bharti Airtel director of operations (India & South Asia) Ajai Puri said, “The new roaming packs are in line with our commitment to provide our customers a seamless international roaming experience and great value. The number of Indians travelling overseas for leisure and business is growing rapidly, and our new IR packs ensure that customers get no bill shocks and have the convenience of always keeping their phones switched on, wherever they are.”

Customers can activate the smart pack through the Airtel website, myAirtel app, USSD, and customer contact centres. These packs can be activated any time, and charges incur only when they are used.
