Radio City announces second edition of ‘Radio City Freedom Awards’

MUMBAI: Private FM network Radio City has announced the second edition of the ‘Radio City Freedom Awards’, which recognises talent from the independent music space.

The network has announced the call for entries and invited independent artists to submit their compositions on the official website of PlanetRadioCity or submit CDs of their compositions across the eight cities of Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore.

The last date for entries is 17 November.

Radio City CEO Apurva Purohit said, “Radio City Freedom Awards were instituted to celebrate the immense talent of independent music composers. The awards epitomize the consistent integrated effort to unveil the hidden talent that forms an important part of the Indian music diaspora. Post the immensely successful debut last year, we are sure that the 2nd edition will see a much larger participation.”

Radio City Freedom Awards invites entries from Indian artists across the globe in eight categories including Best Hip-Hop Rap Artist, Best Folk Fusion Artist, Best Pop Artist, Best Rock, Best Metal, Best Electronica Artist, Best Video and Best Album Art. In this edition, Radio City has added three new categories to encourage artists across diverse music genres. The new categories are, ‘Best Young Indie Artist/Band’, ‘Best Indie Collaboration of the year’ and ‘Indie Genius- Person of the year’.

Shortlisted entries will be judged by a panel of judges comprising Atul Churamani, Yotam Agam, Luke Kenny, Nandini Srikar, Subir Malik and Suneeta Rao. The winners will be felicitated on the RCFA award night in December.

Radio City business head digital business and new media Rachna Kanwar added, “These awards bring forth this talent from across genres and provide a platform for the much needed recognition. Radio City Freedom Awards lets fresh talent rub shoulders with the industry stalwarts that include the awards jury.”

The first edition of the awards saw over 700 entries across eight categories vying to take home the trophy. Shankar Tucker and Benny Dayal were among the winners for ‘Best Folk Fusion Artist’ and ‘Best Pop Artist’ respectively. ‘Enkore’ and ‘Machas With Attitude’, winners of the ‘Best Hip-Hop/Rap Artist’ category, People’s Choice Award and the Judges Choice Award respectively, were given a chance by Vishal Dadlani to showcase their singing prowess for the movie ‘Chennai Express’.
