Today’s handover of 68 shelters in Pulwama is just a first step as donations are continuing to pour in and we will ensure that we are a strong national voice in helping victims resume their normal lives. We are grateful to each and everyone who graciously donated to help all those affected in recent floods in Jammu & Kashmir, Assam & Vishakhapatnam.
“Our aim was also to demonstrate the value of transparency in strengthening credibility, improving donor relationships, facilitating greater collaboration, increasing trust as we rebuild communities for those affected. United Way has been sharing a regular Project Update with each donor so that they know where every rupee of theirs was spent. We thank United Way of India and all our partners in joining us for this project. With harsh winter conditions increasing in the Jammu & Kashmir region, our joint efforts has been focused on completion of all shelters so that adequate protection is provided against harsh winter conditions. We can only imagine how much worse the situation will be for families living in remote villages. We are committed to creating resilient and sustainable communities. We request every citizen and corporate in India to extend the best possible support towards rebuilding communities in Jammu & Kashmir, Assam & Vishakhapatnam,” adds Hejmadi.
United Way of India is a community impact organisation that works at getting different stakeholders together to create measurable, long lasting and tangible changes in communities, and has been proactively working toward restoring normalcy in the lives of disaster affected persons post all major national disasters. This program is also supported by ADP India, Ashmore Foundation and ING Vysya Bank and their donations have helped build 40 shelters. “Having seen the devastating situation of the community during our need assessment visit in late November, we at United Way of India had made a commitment to ourselves to extend maximum possible support within the shortest possible time. I am glad that with the timely and generous support extended by our corporate partners and hundreds of individual donors we were able to get 108 transient shelters in a record time. I must also give credit to SEEDS our partner organization for their firm support on the ground. At United Way, we are aware that this is still not enough and there’s still a long way for rebuilding the community and we stand committed to continue our engagement in the flood affected Jammu & Kashmir,” said Jayanti Shukla, Executive Director, United Way of India.
