Third installment in ‘Kung Fu Panda’ animation franchise crosses $100 mn in opening weekend

MUMBAI: It was another strong weekend for Fox at the global box office. The third installment in the ‘Kung Fu Panda’ animation franchise crossed $100 million in its opening weekend globally. Meanwhile, ‘The Revenant’, which has 12 Oscar nominations, is nearing the $275 million mark globally.

Rentrak, which measures movies and TV everywhere, has announced the official worldwide weekend box office estimates for the weekend of 31 January 2016, as compiled by the company’s theatrical measurement services.

Rentrak senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian commented, “With a knockout punch, Fox’s ‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ delivered a perfect animated movie option for families around the globe with a solid $116.7 million debut with fully $75.7 million of that total coming from the 6 international territories in which it played this weekend. Fox also continues to enjoy a great box office performance for its awards season favorite ‘The Revenant’ that is now just shy of $275 million in global revenue and counting.”
